DID YOU KNOW? Some shelters and rescues have strict age limits that deny seniors the opportunity to own a pet?
The Upper Credit Humane Society’s Caring Companions program is proud to pair seniors with shelter animals either as a temporary or permanent foster placement. Not only does this provide seniors with the love and companionship of pets as well as the proven health benefits, but it gives animals who may be overlooked in the shelter a chance to find a loving home.
When Terrance's cat, Lilly, died, he made a tough decision. As much as he cared for Lilly, he wasn’t getting another cat. “I decided I was too old,” the 93-year-old said. “I’m not going to wake up one day and then there’s nobody to look after the cat.” And yet just six months later, there was Funny Face, curled up on Brown’s couch, purring and getting scratches under his ears. The turning point for Brown was when he heard about the Upper Credit Humane Society’s Caring Companions Program.
Terrance said it was Funny Face’s name that first caught his attention. And after one visit with him, he was convinced to bring another cat into his home. “I picked him up and put him in my lap and he just sat there and he purred like crazy,” Brown said. “He’s a lovely cat. He’s very friendly and affectionate. He’s always sitting at the end of the couch or right beside my arm chair. He sleeps with me at night. He’s never far away."
Terrance said he would definitely recommend Caring Companions to anyone considering the program. And his favourite part of having Funny Face with him? “Just the company. And making a fuss over him.”

"Living alone after my husband died was made easier by having something to care about and care for. She ‘talks’ to me and cuddles on the sofa with me, wakes me up in the morning by meowing for breakfast. I don’t feel alone. She is my constant buddy and I am grateful for her."
"Pets have been a part of my family for most of my life. As an elderly recent widow, living alone, I’m realizing their major importance to my well-being. My dog and cat offer vital companionship, someone to talk to, someone to keep me moving. They give me a reason to get up in the morning. Caring Companions fulfills a special need not only for seniors, but for lonely pets currently living in shelters."
