We are thrilled you are considering adoption as it provides the animals in our shelter with a second chance at a happy home. When choosing an animal to welcome into your home, you are encouraged to consider what type of animal is best suited to your lifestyle. Are you looking for an active dog who will go jogging with you each day? Or would you prefer a snuggly cat who will curl up in your lap at night? How about a small animal, such as a rabbit or guinea pig? We have animals of all types available for adoption and they are all profiled on our website.
The UCHS provides safe shelter to healthy, adoptable animals until they can be placed in suitable, permanent homes. Animals remain in our care until the right home is available, and no animal is ever euthanized due to lack of space or because they have been at the shelter for a long time.
If you have questions about our adoption process, please contact the shelter at 519-833-2287 or via email at info@uppercredit.com.
Our main goal is to find the best home possible for every animal in our care. If you are interested in an animal you’ve seen on our website, submit our Adoption Profile online or in person at the Shelter. This gives us an idea of what you are looking for in an animal. If you don't have a specific animal in mind, don't worry; we keep your profile on file for 6 months so you can find the perfect furry friend.
Schedule a time to come to the Shelter to meet the animals and chat with an Adoption Counsellor. The Adoption Counsellor will review your Adoption Profile with you to see if your expectations and lifestyle are a good match with the animal you are interested in adopting. They can also introduce you to other animals that may be a good fit. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance about introducing your pet to its new home.
If, after meeting the animal and completing the application, you and the UCHS staff believe the animal is a good fit for your home, the adoption will be finalized in a separate visit to allow you time to prepare your home. When you return to take your animal home, you will be sent home with an adoption kit, microchip registration information and the medical records for your animal. A staff member will follow-up with you a week to 10 days after you take the animal home to see how the animal is settling in. You are encouraged to phone the shelter at any time if you have questions or concerns.
